The joy of working with hands – a life skill missing in school curriculum

Your child will build a few eclectic items for the home and themselves while learning basic carpentry skills such as hand sawing, drilling, shaping, gluing and finishing. They will apply school-taught skills in maths, science and geometry in real-life. Not to mention, interact with new people and make new friends!

Key Learnings

  • Workshop safety & practices
  • Understanding wood – basics
  • Understand types of wood products, sheet goods and able to identify quality differences between them
  • How to use a measuring tape and transfer readings to a drawing
  • Applied geometry – area, volume, angles
  • Safe and correct use of hand tools such as saw, drill, hammer, screwdriver, plier, rasp etc.
  • How to join wood using glue, nails, screws, and using clamps
  • How to use basic power tools such as cordless drill, palm sander

All students will be given a safety pledge and will recite it as a group at the beginning of every class.

Design ownership
Students will be encouraged to draw the object to be made. Sufficient guidance will be provided to help the student and make a few design decisions to personalise their item.

Pre-requisites
None, except a lot of self-interest to work with hands. An ability to draw will be very useful, but not mandatory.

Safety Precautions

Workshop safety is extremely important. Working with hand tools and power tools can be dangerous if proper attention and precautions are not taken. Students will undergo a detailed safety orientation at the beginning of the course, and several reminders whenever required.

Safety glasses and ear muffs are available for use during the workshop. A dust mask and ear plugs will be provided for personal use. These are to be retained for the entire duration of the course. A ₹100 fee will be charged for replacement of the set. Nitrile gloves will be provided while applying finish.

Every student must sign a safety declaration form before the start of the workshop – this is a mandatory prerequisite to joining the class. Please bring a signed copy on the first day of the class.

Clothing
It is important to dress properly while working in a workshop. Students should wear pants/jeans/shorts and half-sleeve T-shirts/shirts/tops. Students should not wear full sleeves, flowing fabrics and loose-fitting outfits. Shoes are mandatory. A cap is recommended. Long hair must be tied in a ponytail or a bun.
